4 Things I look for in a Dog Session location

Unlike a lot of photographers, studio work just isn't for me. I prefer the look of natural light in my photos, so all of my sessions are done outdoors. That's why I spend a lot of time researching and visiting sites for my sessions, and a lot of places that most people think are great actually don't work for dog photos. I've found that most commercial photography venues are designed for people photography. Usually they don't allow dogs at all, and even when they do allow dogs they are so expensive to use that I would have to at least double my session booking fee to shoot at them. Some public spaces aren't much better price wise. Most larger cities in Georgia require a very expensive permit to be able to photograph in their parks. Georgia state parks also charge a hefty fee. I want to provide both the best experience and best value for my clients, so your session location is very important. Some dogs don't mind a lot of people and other dogs, where others prefer a quiet space where they don't have lots of distractions. When I am on a hunt for a new venue, whether for a new client, or if I hear about a place that sounds promising, here are the things I look for:

Has plenty of parking and is easy to find.

I don't like parking on the street and I don't want my clients to have to either. I've seen parks with no parking at all, or the lot only holds five cars! I only consider parks that have a large parking lot. I don't choose a venue that is super isolated or the entrance is hard to find. I've seen a park that is at the end of a dead end street. I've also seen a park where the entrance was behind commercial buildings. I didn't choose either of these parks because they didn't have enough going for them to offset the negatives.

   Has restrooms inside the park.

I've shot in a park with no bathroom at a client's request before because there was a restaurant across the street if we needed a restroom, and this client didn't want to change clothes for their session. It's also good to have a place where you can clean up if you need to. Dirty paw prints on your pants may happen at some point during your session. It can be very inconvenient to have to leave the venue to use the restroom or get a drink of water.

Venue has both open fields and wooded areas with plenty of shade.

In most of my sessions, I want to include photos where there is a pretty backdrop of trees, along with some of the dogs running or playing in an open field. I also like a place with areas that are not too manicured. Long grasses look great in photos of larger dogs. Ideally there are a few hills and maybe a lake or a stream.

Is large enough for session variety.

It is possible to do one of my shorter Limited Sessions at a venue that is only a few acres, but for a full Signature Session these parks are just too small to be useful, especially on the weekend when most parks are crowded. I usually don't consider a park that has less than 7 acres. Park sizes usually range from around 5 acres to over 700 acres. It might surprise you, but in some cases the largest parks can be best. One of my favorite parks to photograph sessions in has a road with multiple parking areas running thru it so you can drive between photo spots. There is plenty of room to spread out and get away from large groups, and it can be perfect for dogs that react negatively to other dogs.

I like to keep my session prices affordable and take the best care of my clients and their dogs. I'll do my absolute best to find the perfect place for your session.
